Some dudes got their 15min via  The Early Show wah-wahing about how they were “forced” to shoot and kill a tiger shark while spearfishing.

Of course, they got it all on tape. Apparently Casey Affleck was there, just in case. The shark said, “I got a million dollars in the bank, what have you got, bitch?” And the divers were like, “A spear, bitch!”

But all joking aside, the tiger shark is an endangered species, and maybe if they tried, oh I dunno, getting out of the freaking water, they wouldn’t have to struggle for TWO HOURS to bring it down. The shark was not attacking them, it was drawn by the energy and blood trail it sensed from the struggling fish. Any spear fisherman knows that sharks are almost a guaranteed hazard of their hobby/trade. What these guys did was completely uncalled for. Check out some of the comments left on the CBS News message board:

I spearfish….that’s a load of crap….they shot that shark on purpose……I’ve been approach by sharks that size and basically if you leave them alone they leave you alone…..those guys are idiots…don’t listen to a word they say.

The other two bozos were able to freely swim from their boat to kill this curious shark – they were in no danger if they calmly left the water.

Just ask any surfer – they have almost all seen them cruise by and leave…

Here’s the LINK for the video. I don’t post the slaughter of any animal on my blog.

Obviously, you can’t read. Go to your source…IUCN 2008 Red List….look at the small word before the word “threatened”

“NEAR threatened”

Which is in the “LOWER RISK” category.

These guys have been freediving/spearfishing for years. Almost every dive has involved seeing sharks. This is the first time any of them killed a shark. I hope none of the people criticizing them are even in a situation even close to this one. Again, it’s sure easy to second-guess.

It’s been a blast splitting hairs with you, potatoass, and I hope those “spearfisherman” are aware they have such a champion such as yourself, fighting for their right to torture an animal for HOURS on end. They practically rode that shark all the way down to its death. Now, I’m actually a proponent of hunting. But hunting for a purpose. I am just not convinced by the evidence that this animal was posing any menace to these guys. Just have to call them as I see them, or READ them, because yes, surprisingly, I can read.

Tiger Sharks are not endangered. There is nothing illegal about what was done. Easy to sit on your ass and type away saying what someone should have done, isn’t it?

While not “endangered,” the tiger shark is listed as “threatened.” Was the actions of the spear fishermen illegal? No. But was it exactly moral? I think the verdict is still out on that one…

Simpfendorfer, C. 2000. Galeocerdo cuvier. In: IUCN 2008. 2008 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

And by the way, potatoass, yes, I quite enjoy typing my opinions for public consumption. Evidently, so do you.

Thanks for reading.

What a bunxch os sissy’s, my first reaction would to be to get the hell away from the shark, not provoke it.
